Rythm Bot is shutting down on September 15th, 2022

Rythm Bot joined Groovy Bot as the next major Discord music bot to close after receiving a legal notice from YouTube. It’s happening again, as expected.  The Discord music bot Rythm, popular among many users, …

Rythm bot shuts down september 2021

The service will shut down on September 15th, 2021, at 8:00 am PST. Users will no longer be able to listen to their favorite music on their Discord server voice channels.

As of today, Rythm will be shutting down after receiving a notice from YouTube. The bot will quit working on September 15th, 2021 at 8:00am PST.
Rythm was originally started back in 2016 as a small project by our founder, ImBursting, for just him and his friends. In no time at all, it grew to become much more than that – ending up as the largest bot on Discord. He never expected it to grow this big, but it's been incredible for us as a team to watch it grow to over 20 million communities, connecting people all around the world and bringing joy to so many people.

Even though our current service is shutting down, we're not going anywhere. We've spent the last year working on something brand new in the music space that will revolutionize how we all listen to music. We can't share much yet, but keep Rythm in your servers and subscribe to our newsletter to get updates as we release them over the next few months.

If you're looking for a new place to hang out, you can also join our community – we've built an active music space on Discord where we host regular events and giveaways.

We wanted to thank everyone for choosing Rythm and believing in us for all of these years. We know your experience on Discord won't be the same without Rythm, but stay tuned – this isn't the end.

Rythm Bot Shuts down its service on Discord

Google's cease-and-desist notice

In a cease and desist notice, Google has ordered Rythm Bot to stop serving over 20 million communities on Discord. As mentioned, Rythm Bot will be shutting down on 15th September 2021.

In short, a cease and desist letter informs the recipients to cease a specific activity, or else YouTube will file a lawsuit.

“One way or another, we knew this was due to happen eventually,” Rythm's creator Yoav told The Verge. “Which is why we started working on something new a year ago. Groovy receiving one just meant it would happen sooner rather than later.”

Rythm Bot's violation of YouTube ToS

Groovy was shut down for the same reason. GroovyBot's complaint included that they “modified the service and used it for commercial purposes,” which is why it needs to be discontinued.

In due course, the other music bots may also face the same fate. In the meantime, Rythm Bot's creators are working on something new. According to their message on Rythm.fm, it will still be in the music space that will change how we all listen to music.

Rythm has asked users to keep the bot on their servers and subscribe to the website's newsletter. By doing this, you will stay on top of any latest news that unravels in the next months for the upcoming project.

So, Rythm Bot fans need not despair; the project will continue. We'll have to wait and see what's next for this service.

Yaov's Thoughts

Now that two of Discord's most popular music bots have been decommissioned, Yaov predicts other bots will receive notices from Google in the coming weeks.

“I believe that now we received the letter, all music bots will be getting them too in the following weeks, and I strongly believe all of them will shut down,” Yaov resumed. “As someone that was a very early user of Discord, it's hard to envision Discord without music bots. They've become key to the experience and bring so much fun and engagement to a community. It's a sad end of an era here for everyone on the platform.”
