Dear reader,
For the past month, I have been heavily invested in playing and streaming Genshin Impact. At the moment, I am at Adventure Rank (AR) 43, and since the Spiral Abyss is essentially the endgame content of Genshin Impact, I decided to write a guide based on my experiences. I have now cleared all 8 floors of the old Spiral Abyss with 9 stars with a single main DPS (Keqing), so it's a good time to offer my advice.
What is Spiral Abyss?
The Spiral Abyss is a special type of domain, unlocked at Adventure Rank 20 and accessed through the wormhole in the sky at the edge of Cape Oath.
The Spiral Abyss consists of two main parts: the Abyss Corridor (Floors 1-8) and the Abyssal Moon Spire (Floors 9-12). The Corridor's rewards can only be collected once, and completing all floors unlocks the Spire. The Spire's rewards reset on the 1st and 16th days of the month during the Moment of Syzygy.
Each floor consists of three chambers and in each chamber you will face time-trial battle challenges of increasing difficulty, depending. Clearing a chamber rewards you with 1-3 stars depending on your performance (time remaining, or shield % remaining in some chambers). To advance to the next floor you will need to get at least 6 out of 9 available stars on the current Spiral Abyss floor.
As you can imagine, the first floors are not endgame content, but from floor 6 you are pretty much in late game content and in floor 7 it will start becoming hard to outgrow the opponents in terms of level, so you will really need to have the right team formations in order to get all 9 stars.
So let's get to it as I'm about to explain to you the challenges of each floor and how to tackle them.
Buffs, Elemental Reactions, Elemental Resonance, and getting 9 stars
This is a strategy I primarily utilized for floors 7 and 8 and it goes like this. Since chamber buffs are typically stronger than floor buffs, with the tradeoff that their effect lasts only for the chamber you can do something like this.
- Run #1: Chamber 1 – Get the chamber buff, get 3 stars, abandon.
- Run #2: Chamber 1 – Get the floor buff, get any number of stars, build up your Elemental bursts (Q), DON'T DIE Chamber 2 – Get the chamber buff, get three stars, abandon.
- Run #3: Chamber 1 – Get the floor buff, get any number of stars, DON'T DIE, Chamber 2 – Get the floor buff, get any number of stars, build up your Elemental bursts (Q), DON'T DIE, Chamber 3 – Get the chamber buff, get 3 stars, you are done.
This works pretty well guys. But let's go a bit further. When you lack a proper DPS, you need to make up for it with elemental reactions. To some extend this is a realistic goal. For instance, I used Bennett (C1) and Chongyung (C3) to generate Melt reactions (2x damage). This is an obvious one but…
What made a difference is my decision to start using placeholder characters like Amber and Lisa to trigger Elemental Resonance, which I explain in detail in my characters guide and tier list.
As an example for floor 8 I went with the following teams:
Part #1: Bennett, Xiangling, Chongyun, Diona. This allowed me to trigger both the Pyro and Cryo elemental resonances. Fervant Flames increases Attack by 25%, while Shattering Ice increases Critical Rating against enemies affected by Cryo or Frozen by 15%. So using Chongyung to apply Cryo and following up with Bennet's E or Q increases the attack's Crit % by 15% and generates a Melt reaction.
Part #2: Keqing, Xingqiu, Barbara, Lisa. Yes, Lisa. While the Hydro elemental resonance only provides a healing bonus, the electro one (High Voltage) is an interesting one: Superconduct, Overloaded, and Electro-Charged have a 100% chance to generate an Electro Elemental Particle (CD: 5s). This was useful to me as I wanted to build up Keqing's Q as fast as possible to speed up the process of clearing the 2nd halves of the chambers.
So to give you an idea overall, I tried to make the first teams as fast as they could get, so that they wouldn't be too slow and I would be able to make up for the time lost by using a second team with a completely broken DPS character (in my mind, Keqing is S+).

Floor 1
Ley Line Disorder
- Pyro DMG dealt by all party members increased by 75%
- Overloaded DMG increased by 200%
The first floor of Spiral Abyss is very easy as long as you have some pyro characters like Xiangling or even Amber (yes, I know she sucks). You can also throw in Barbara for healing. You can also add the Traveler (Anemo) for some crowd control. Of course, having Diluc or Klee will make everything much easier, or even Bennett, because even though he is primarily a support character he can easily get through the first floors of Spiral Abyss.
Don't use electro characters in Floor 1 as many enemies are immune to electro. Instead, use pyro characters to generate Overloaded elemental reactions since the Ley Line Disorder buffs Overloaded DMG by 200%

Floor 2
Ley Line Disorder
- Cryo DMG dealt by all party members increased by 75%.
- The duration of the Frozen status effect is greatly increased.
In this floor you can rely on Kaeya for Cryo Damage, setting of SuperConduct elemental reactions against electro enemies, and freezing hydro enemies. Since you apply Cryo it is also good to have a pyro character here like Xiangling for some melt against enemies that are not imbued with any element, like the Blazing Axe Mitachurl. Barbara can help you with healing and her shield that will trigger Overcharged. Of course, having Congyun here would be great.
Having an Electro character, even if it's Lisa is a good idea to break the Hydro Abyss Mage's shields. A formation of Kaeaya, Xiangling, Lisa and Barbara should work for this floor, if you don't have better options.
The recommended level for this floor is 40 so it's fairly easy to outgrow the floor.

This chamber does not feature a time trial, instead you need to prevent the Monolith from taking damage as much as possible. Since the Ley Line Disorder increases frozen duration you should use Cryo a lot to freeze the Slimes, not allowing them to attack the Monolith. The Mitachurl seems to only target you, so prioritize the Hydro Abyss Mage. His Hydro shield will go down much faster if you have an Electro character in your party as Hydro is weak against Electro.

Floor 3
Ley Line Disorder
- Increases Swirl reaction DMG by 300%, and its AoE by 100%.
- Anemo DMG dealt by all party members increased by 75%.
Things get interesting in Floor 3, because – let's admit it – the Anemo Traveler is not a great character. So if you have Venti here this should be cakewalk. Personally, I had Sucrose as my main damage dealer and croud-controller. At the same time I had Bennett allowing me to heal and power up other characters while applying Pyro. So what you can do instead is use the Anemo Traveler, Xiangling, Lisa (meh), and Barbara. If you can get rid of Lisa and throw in a better pyro character or literally any 5 star, do so.
Keep in mind that Swirl is triggered every time Anemo interacts with another element.
Also, I have not talked about buffs so far. Typically, I get DMG buffs on every chambers and I try to choose one that affects the whole floor in chambers 1 & 2. In chamber 3 just get the best buff you can. But if you get stuck in a specific chamber just get the best buff you can even if it's effect last just for the chamber itself.
In this floor I went with Bennett, Xinyan, Sucrose and Diona if I am not mistaken.

Large Cryo Slime ×1 | Large Electro Slime ×1 | Pyro Hilichurl Shooter ×2 |
Cryo Hilichurl Shooter ×2 | Wooden Shield Hilichurl Guard ×5 |
You can see here that we have a mix of different elements in the slimes. I would recommend relying on Anemo here and generating Swirl elemental reactions. Some slimes will be immune to one reaction but will get damaged by the other ones. Given that the Swirl AoE is larger on this floor, this should work quite well. Always keep your eye on the Shooters too, as especially the Cryo ones can be very disrupting. If you have Sucrose you can throw them off the platform with her Elemental Skill or a Charged Attack (that's pretty sweet and fun). Other Charged Attacks work too of course since they knock the enemies back.
Chamber 2

Treasure Hoarders – Cryo Potioneer ×2 | Treasure Hoarders – Crusher ×1 | Treasure Hoarders – Electro Potioneer ×6 |
Treasure Hoarders – Pugilist ×1 |
This one is a bit challenging as the enemies are not imbued with any element. You will have to apply Pyro, Cryo, Hydro, or Electro and then use Anemo for Swirls. Try to maximize you energy generation so that you can use a lot of Elemental Bursts. Personally, I relied heavily on Bennett to apply Pyro with Fantastic Voyage and get an attack boost, then switched to Sucrose who was equipped with Sacrificial, leading to double Elemental Skills in some cases and a really fast energy generation.
Using Sucrose's Elemental Burst (Q) allows you to imbue it with another element like pyro so that you can spread it around. An easy way to do it is to use Xiangling, build her energy, then use her Elemental Burst – Pyronado – then switch to Sucrose and use her Elemental Burst immediately, the Pyronado's Pyro effect will imbue it with Pyro, leading to some massive damage. Another alternative would be to imbue it with Cryo by using it and then applying a Cryo Elemental Skill to it, like Kaeya's, then switch to Bennet and use Fantastic Voyage to generate Melt Elemental Reactions (2x DMG).
Chamber 3
Challenge | Defeat 2 enemies Complete this challenge within 300s |
---|---|
Goal | ★Remaining challenge time longer than 60 sec. ★Remaining challenge time longer than 120 sec. ★Remaining challenge time longer than 180 sec. |
Enemies
Ruin Guard ×1 | Blazing Axe Mitachurl ×1 |
My recommendation here is to get rid of the Blazing Axe Mitachurl really fast and then focus on the Ruin Guard. The Ruin Guard's Homing Missiles and Spin Attack can be very annoying, but there is one easy way to handle him. If you have a character with a bow, aim for his eye with a Charged Attack. The Ruin Guard's eye is his weak spot, and two hits (which will be Critical Hits) on it will have the Ruin Guard collapse. Having someone like Diona is ideal here because her Charged Attack applies Cryo, so you can then switch to an Electro character for Superconduct that will reduce its defense, which is a pain in the ass. Applying Pyro, Cryo, Electro and generating Swirls is also recommended.
Overall, Floor 3's chamber 3 is much easier than chamber 2 in my opinion.

- Electro DMG dealt by all party members increased by 75%.
- Electrocharged DMG increased by 150%, and it's AoE is increased by 100%.
Having Keqing, Fischl, or Razor here will make this a breeze. You can add two Pyro characters like Bennet and Xiangling or Xinyan, for the extra 25% attack and Vaporize, and Barbara to get enemies wet to take advantage of the Electrocharged DMG bonus. Break Hydro Abyss Mages' shields with Electro.

You need to defend a Ley Line Monolith here. Try to aggro the enemies as soon as they spawn and prioritize taking down ranged enemies first as the floor is wet so Shooters may end up freezing you. The Blazing Axe Mitachurl that spawns along with the Hydro Abyss Mage comes straight for you from what I have experienced, so go straight for the Mage and it will follow you. If you have a problem with crowd control here use Venti, Sucrose or another crowd controller. Cryo characters are a good option to freeze enemies too, but keep in mind that freeze does not las long.

Note: From Floor 5 and up until the end of Spiral Abyss and the Moon Spire you are going to need two parties as all chambers are split in two halves. At this point you will need to start building two main carries and work from there.
Floor 5 is an easy one. You are going to need some Pyro for Chamber 1 – First Half and some Hydro for Chamber 1 – Second Half. Based on that, You can build your first team for Overloaded and Melt Elemental Reactions for instance, and the second team for Vaporize and Electrocharged. My lineup:

Floor 7
Among the first 8 floors of the Spiral Abyss, Floor 7 is the most interesting and probably hardest one. What makes it unique is that the Fatui enemies you have to go against all have shields:
- Cryo-gunners require you to use Pyro to break their shields.
- Hydro-gunners require you to use Electro to break their shields.
- Electro-hammers require you to Cryo to break their shields.
- Pyro-slingers require you to Hydro to break their shields.
- Geochanters require you to use Claymores or Geo to break their shields.
So to beat this floor with 9 stars you need the right counters. I got 8 stars in my first run, missing one in the first chamber, and then did a second run targeting 3 stars on the first chamber.
Note: ALWAYS go for the Hydrogunners first as their gun can heal the other enemies.
So this is team composition at its best.
Cyberfunk's first run:
Party #1: Keqing (counters Hydrogunners), Xiangling (counters Cyrogunners), Xinyan (counters Cryogunners & Geochanters), Diona (healing & weak Electrohammer counter)
Pyro Elemental Resonance & Cryo Elemental Resonance
Party #2: Bennett (counters Cryogunners), Chongyun (counters Electrohammers & Geochanters), Xingqiu (counters Pyro-slingers), Amber (Weak Cryo-gunner counter and Resonance filler)
Pyro Elemental Resonance
The problem for me was that the Melts and Vaporizes were just not enough for DPS in the second half of chamber #1.
So, Cyberfunk's second run lineup:
Party #1: Bennett (counters Cryogunners), Chongyun (counters Electrohammers & Geochanters), Xiangling (counters Cryo-Gunners), Lisa (That's not a typo, I was hoping to break the Hydro shield with her – but Chongyun did it better).
Pyro Elemental Resonance
Party #2: Keqing (counters Hydrogunners but there aren't any), Xinyan (counters Cryogunners & Geochanters), Xingqiu (counters Pyro-slingers), Amber (filler)
Pyro Elemental Resonance
The plan was simple here. Kill the HydroGunner with freezes and Melts, if possible. Use Pyro for the Cryo-Gunner's shield and Cryo for the Electro-Hammer's shield. For the second half: Unleash Keqing's devastating DPS. Somehow it worked.
I encourage you to watch the video guide for this one.
