At the end of 2020, we learnt that The Mandalorian was officially renewed for a season 3 (surprise, surprise). Official confirmation is always better than speculation of course. So, among all the noise Disney has made with its announcement of a lot for more for the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, let's see what we know about the return of Baby Yoda and Pedro Pascal.
Season 3 release date: When will the Mandalorian return on Disney+?
The Mandalorian is expected to return to Disney+ for season 3 at the start of 2022, at best. Season 3 will start filming on April 5th 2021, based on the filming industry site Production List a potential release date is April 2022. Stagecraft will be vital during filming due to COVID-19 concerns.
The Mandalorian's release will follow that of The Book of Boba Fett, which is set to kick off in December 2021.
The Mandalorian season 3 cast: Who do we expect to return
Pascal's stunt double Brendan Wayne confirmed Pascal's return in an Instagram post following the the season 2 finale which said:
“No spoilers!!! But just in case the world didn't know yet Pedro Pascal is incredible. The journey they wrote for him this season was so beautiful. The fact that Pedro went beyond the page and made this epic. Thank you Pedro Pascal.”
He added: “Yes!! Pedro is coming back. There was never any question. DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ.”
Here's a list of other possible returnees, including:
- Greef Karga (Carl Weathers)
- Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito)
- Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson)
- Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff)
One character who definitely won't be returning is Cara Dune. Since filming the first two seasons, Gina Carano has now been let go from The Mandalorian and everything else involving Star Wars, after sharing offensive posts on social media.
Meanwhile this is what Giancarlo Esposito said about season 3 (and 4):
“We’re living in a universe that is huge and [that has] so much to explore. So I think this show is going to start to lay the groundwork for the depth and breadth that’s going to come in season three and season four, where you’re really gonna start to get answers.”
The recently announced upcoming Star Wars shows, Rangers of the New Republic, Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett will be set during the same timeline as The Mandalorian, so we need to wait and see what their connection to the Mandalorian will be in season 3.
We don't know much yet about Rangers of the New Republic, the Ahsoka spin-off was all but confirmed anyway Boba's upcoming solo installment is something that Disney has been planning for quite some time.
“I am told what's happening and what the plan is,” Pascal said (via Indiewire) about the season three plot, “but I can't share it. They are in the expansion of this world, where there are so many unexpected surprises and timelines that are going to be dealt with.”
“If the character were to cross over into these worlds, it will be utilized in a way that isn't meant to be expected. I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise of whether or not characters from the show we already know are crossing over.”
The Mandalorian season 1 and season 2 are streaming now on Disney+.
