Che Guevara: The Ultimate Symbol of Revolution

The ultimate symbol of revolution shouldn't be an animal, a concrete or abstract shape, or a general idea. How can someone relate to something so general? It should be the face of a person. Of someone who sacrificed everything for the freedom of others. And it is. The ultimate symbol for those that envision change. The face of the man who was murdered on the 9th of October of 1967 by order of the dictator of Bolivia, Alfredo Ovando Candía. Che Guevara was captured by the CIA, which even employed Klaus Barbie, the “Butcher of Lyon” and Nazi war criminal. Barbie had first-hand knowledge of counter-guerrilla warfare and was a valuable ally for the CIA. What an irony…

Both the words and actions of this man are well-known. So here I will only quote some of my favorite quotes by Che.

Che Guevara Quotes

“Many will call me an adventurer, and that I am…only one of a different sort: one who risks his skin to prove his truths.”

“If you tremble with indignation at every injustice then you are a comrade of mine.”

“We cannot be sure of having something to live for unless we are willing to die for it.”

“At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love. It is impossible to think of a genuine revolutionary lacking this quality.”

“Let the world change you and you can change the world”

“Be realistic, demand the impossible!”

“Above all, always be capable of feeling deeply any injustice committed against anyone, anywhere in the world.”

“There are no boundaries in this struggle to the death. We cannot be indifferent to what happens anywhere in the world, for a victory by any country over imperialism is our victory; just as any country's defeat is a defeat for all of us.”

“The best form of saying is being.”

“I am not a liberator. Liberators do not exist. The people liberate themselves.”

“I know you are here to kill me. Shoot, coward, you are only going to kill a man.”

“The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall.”

Black Lives Always Mattered — To Some

“Those who kill their own children and discriminate daily against them because of the color of their skin; those who let the murderers of blacks remain free, protecting them, and punishing the black population because they demand their legitimate rights as free men — how can those who do this consider themselves guardians of freedom? The United States government is not the champion of freedom, but rather the perpetrator of exploitation and oppression against the peoples of the world and a large part of its own population.”

“We speak out to put the world on guard against what is happening in South Africa. The brutal policy of apartheid is applied before the eyes of the nations of the world. The peoples of Africa are compelled to endure the fact that the superiority of one race over another remains an official policy on the African continent. In the name of this racial superiority, murder is committed with impunity. Can the United Nations do nothing to stop this?”

The Iconic Portrait of Che Guevara. Nowadays it has turned to a t-shirt logo.

You Cannot Kill an Idea – Nor a Symbol

“If we search the pages of history, it is likely that we will find no other case in which a leader with such a limited number of men has set about a task of such importance; a case in which a leader with such a limited number of men has set out to fight against such large forces. Such proof of confidence in himself, such proof of confidence in the peoples, such proof of faith in man’s capacity to fight, can be looked for in the pages of history but the likes of it will never be found.

And he fell […]

Before history, people who act as he did, people who do and give everything for the cause of the poor, grow in stature with each passing day and find a deeper place in the heart of the peoples with each passing day […] “

His conduct may have been profoundly influenced by the idea that people have a relative value in history, the idea that causes are not defeated when people fall, that the powerful march of history cannot and will not be halted when leaders fall[…]

Fidel Castro, 19th October 1967

And thus, I do not even have to mention his name as it is known everywhere globally. I don't have to write about Che Guevara; everything has been written and said. As in his own words, hasta Siempre, Comandante!
